Saving on your groceries in 2012!

The price of groceries is on the rise, yet most American didn't see a raise this year.  So how can you not break the bank when it comes to buying groceries for your family!  Here are my top suggestions!

Make a meal plan - Going to the store with a list of what you need for a weeks worth of meals is a MUST!  Going into the store and making it up on the fly with cost you time and money!  So sit down before you go to the store and decided what you are going to make for dinner (and if you stay home with kids lunch too) for the next week, then figure out what ingredients you need!  Make your list and stick to it.  If you don't have time to make a list you can sign up for service that do it for you.  The best one I have found is E-mealz and it cost about $5 a month!

Shop sales - Look at your sales paper and see what will be on sale for that week.  If you can design your weekly meals around what is on sale.

Stock up -  Stock up on  meat and other things that can be frozen or kept when they are on sale.  Sale rotations  usually go in about a 3 month period.  For example around Thanksgiving stuffing, canned vegetables and Turkey are usually on sale.  If you eat any of those on a regular basis I would stock up at Thanksgiving time, when things are at their cheapest!  Coupons can also save you a lot:)  Click here to go to our Couponing 101 page!

Shop discount stores - In almost every town their is a discount grocery store.  Where we live it's Super Dollar Discount, other places have Aldi's!  Most towns have at least one discount grocery store!  You don't have to go to these stores every week for your groceries but go and stock up on the things that are way cheaper their then at the grocery store!

Don't store hop - Because I am serious couponer people often think I go to 3 or 4 different stores a week.  I am a full time working mom, I don't have time for that!  Going to a bunch of different stores a week really is just a waste of time (unless everyone has SUPER amazing deals, then I do go to multiple stores, however that is about 2 times a year)!  It waste your time and money!  When you store hop you waste gas and usually end up buying and spending more then you would if you went one place.  So what I do is pick the grocery store that has the best deals and go only to that store for the week.

Have a Meatless Monday -  Meat is the thing that will cost your far more then anything else you put in your shopping cart!  So one day a week go without meat.  Have meatless spaghetti or quesdillas!  Have something that doesn't require meat!  In the long run it will save you a lot!

Have Left over Saturday -  In my house we NEVER have left overs thanks to my husbands crazy appetite!  However this is something my sister has instituted at her home.  She said she was throwing away left over at the end of the week and so she decided when they started to clutter her fridge she wouldn't make dinner that night but have left overs!  What a great idea!  You don't have to cook and things don't go to waste!
